Attendance Procedures
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Regular and punctual attendance is mandatory for all students. During school hours, students are expected to be in the classroom.

ALL STUDENTS  are expected to be in school and in their seats ten minutes (10) BEFORE THE 8:00 AM BELL.

ARRIVING TO SCHOOL LATEFor and excused tardy your child must present a note from the doctor or court.

ABSENCES

WHEN A STUDENT IS ABSENTAccording to the California State Auditors, all of the following must be included in each note in order for it to be deemed valid:  Name of student, name and signature of person who wrote the note, relationship to pupil of other than parent, date of note, date of absence, reason for absence, birthdate.

Parents must call the Attendance Office by 9:00 am of the day of the absence (310-847-1525). When returning from an absence, the student must report to the Attendance Office before school with a note of explanation from his or her parent or guardian. If a student returns without a note, the absence becomes a truancy on the student's attendance record. A student may clear the truancy by bringing a note to the Attendance Office the next day. Parents should notify the Attendance Office of prolonged absences.

TARDY POLICY
Students are marked tardy if they are not in their assigned seats and ready to work when the bell begins to ring. Three tardies in a grading period earn a "U" in work habits on the report card. There are tardy sweeps conducted randomly. Students caught by the tardy sweep are given detention and cleaning duties.

In order to ensure that every child receives the instructional hours necessary to meet the grade-level culmination requirements, it is imperative that he/she arrive to school on time and prepared to learn.  Classes begin at 8:00 am daily.  It is strongly recommended that each student arrive on campus no later than 7:45 am so that he/she can arrive in class prior to the sounding of the tardy bell.

Student records related to attendance and tardiness are maintained for the entire school year and are cumulative.  Individuals who demonstrate a pattern of tardiness will be subject to the following progressive disciplinary measures.

2nd Tardy            .            .        Warning and campus beautification.

3rd Tardy            .            .        Parent contacted by telephone; conference held.

4th Tardy         .           .           . Detention assigned – 30 minutes parent notified, parent participation getting the student to class on time.

5th Tardy              .              .    Parent conference scheduled and behavior contract signed.

6th Tardy/Subsequent Tardies      Parent Shadow/conference, refered to SARB (School Attendance Review Board) and/or further disciplinary actions.

OPERATION BRIGHT FUTURE ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students at Wilmington Middle School must attend school everyday and arrive on time to all classes 100% of the time.  Absences must be verified.
Students with five or more unverified/unexcused absences in the current school year will be referred to Operation Bright Future (OBF).  Regardless of whether an absence is verified, unverified, excused, or unexcused, parents or guardians must always notify the school of a student’s absence.

VERIFIED LEGAL ABSENCE

•    Illness absence with a doctor’s note or authorization by school nurse or other authorized school official.
•    Exclusion from school supported by written documentation by nurse or other authorized school official.
•    Medical appointments; verified by a written note from a doctor.
•    Quarantine of the home; verified by the health department.
•    Funeral due to the death of a member of the student’s immediate family (1 day, within the state; 3 days, outside the state).
•    Absences for justifiable personal reasons, with prior written request and written approval from the principal or authorized school official, such as an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at a religious retreat, or attendance at an employment conference.  Written proof of attendance regarding justifiable personal reasons is needed for verification.
•    Any other absence with prior written approval from the principal will be verified.

Truancy:  Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without a valid excuse on three occasions or tardy for more than 30 minutes in a school day on three occasions in one school year, is a truant.  OBF will contact the parents of students with five or more unverified/unexcused absences and direct them to attend a General Assembly.  If necessary, OBF will also direct those families to a City Attorney Hearing and the School Attendance Review Board.  When all efforts to prevent truancy fail, a referral is made to the City Attorney’s Office and parents or guardians may be subject to prosecution for an infraction or misdemeanor.  Please see Ms. Rocio Jimenez, PSA Counselor for further information on compulsory education laws and/or assistance.
