Visual Arts Department
Ms. T. Phillips - Department Chair
A comprehensive Visual Arts program is offered at Wilmington Middle School. Select courses offered are: General and Advanced Art, Design, Craft, American Images, Stage Craft and Digital Imaging for 7th and 8th grade levels. These courses meet the California State Standards and the LAUSD curriculum requirements. Visual Arts courses meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles as well as provide all students with opportunities to develop artistically and cognitively, allowing them to develop self expression and self confidence and experience a sense of creative accomplishment.
In all Visual Arts courses, our students learn about the elements of art (line, shape, form, color, texture and space) and the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, harmony and unity). Students learn how to recognize, describe, analyze, and write about art as well as apply what they learn to other subject areas.
In accordance with individual capacities, students explore a variety of arts media techniques with hands-on activities in drawing, painting, sculpture, world crafts, design and the use of contemporary technologies including digital imaging. All classes require a vocabulary notebook and written reflections on select works of art.
Wilmington Middle School's Art Department Faculty are: Ms. T. Phillips and Ms. K. Ortiz.
